So, first, what do I want to improve on? In other
words, what do I wish to achieve? For my job, we are expected to go through
yearly appraisals, for which we need to set targets we want to achieve by the
next year. We are told to put them down in a certain format.
This format is:
S specific
M measurable
A achievable
R realistic
T time specific
Specific means that you need to put your goals down
as specific as possible.
Measurable means that you can actually measure that
you have achieved the goals.
Achievable means that you can achieve your goals.
If your goal is to be a millionaire and you have a good plan and the building
stones to get there this may be achievable.
Realistic means that your goals are not only
possible in your dreams, but can be achieved in real life. If your goal is to
be a millionaire by tomorrow, this is generally not realistic.
Time specific means that you put a specific time
frame for your goals.
So, now back to me. What are my goals? Which
improvements would I like to make to who I am?
My Goals:
- I want to be a better mum.
- I want to be a better house wife.
- I want to be a better wife.
- I want to be a better professional.
- I want to be more confident.
- I want to lose some weight.
- I want to do more exercise.
- I want to spend more time studying and keeping up to date.
- I want to spend more time crafting for relaxation.
- I want to be a better team leader at CRAFT Challenge.
Let's put my goals down in that format.
Goal 1.
Be a better mum. At present I am a good enough mum.
Being a better mum would mean, spending more time with the kids, listen to them
more, do more things with them, being more patient, keep my voice in check.
Specific:
I will increase the time I spend with my children
by putting some protected time in my weekly schedule to do things with them.
Measurable:
I aim to put this time in for at least one hour of
protected time every Saturday and Sunday. It therefore will be measurable.
Achievable:
As long as I schedule my time, this should be
achievable.
Realistic:
I believe this goal to be realistic as long as the
kids agree with it as well.
Time specific:
I believe this goal can be achieved by next week,
although it will need to be continued from there on.
Goal 2.
Be a better house wife. I currently tell myself
that I don't have enough time to keep the house to the standard I would like it
to be. Realistically I think it will take over a year to get it up to that
standard if I did not have a job as well. It will likely take years to get it
there with a job to contend with as well.
Specific:
I want to set aside a minimum of 1 hour a day for
house work every week day and 2 hours every weekend day.
Measurable:
As the number of hours is specified, it is
measurable.
Achievable:
This should be achievable if scheduled.
Realistic:
I believe this to be realistic as long as other
problems don't interfere, st illness.
Time specific:
I should be able to have this implemented by next
week and will then need to continue with it.
Goal 3.
Be a better wife. This is a tricky one. How can I
do this one? Part of this one will be achieved by the previous two goals. Other
than that, I should aim to nag less and give more wanted attention.
Specific:
It is difficult to put this in specific terms.
Build in protected time as a couple on a daily basis. The amount of time will
differ from day to day.
Measurable:
It will be measurable if it is put on the schedule.
Achievable:
As long as no interruptions take place by others,
it should be achievable.
Realistic:
It should also be realistic.
Time specific:
I should be able to have this implemented by next
week as well.
Goal 4.
To be a better professional. In order to be this, I
will need to ensure that I keep up to date with my field of experience, that I
ensure to keep to time and have all the work done in an orderly and timely
fashion. I need to be emphatic, supportive and authorative where required. This
comes with being the boss at work.
Specific:
I will make sure that I arrive on time at work,
start work on time and need to make sure post, results and reports are dealt
with in a timely fashion. The first 2 should be dealt with the same day and the
reports should be dealt with within a week of the request being received.
Measurable:
As I have put time limits on these goals, they
should be measurable.
Achievable:
This may be more tricky. Things can suddenly pop up
in my line of business; rail roading all well laid plans. In the majority of
cases this should be achievable.
Realistic:
This is realistic most of the time and only is not
realistic during times of illness, major events or holiday. These would be the
exclusions.
Time Specific:
As I keep to most of these already and just want to
improve on them, it should be possible to have this implemented in 2 weeks’
time.
Goal 5.
I want to be more confident. This is a tricky goal
as I have never been a confident person. The only way I am likely to achieve
this is once I have made the improvements I wish to make and when I have
succeeded at achieving them.
Specific:
I no longer want to feel that I am not good enough,
but want to feel I am the best I can possibly be in all fields of my
life.
Measurable:
The only way this will be measurable is in the fact
I no longer will be telling myself off all the time, rather I will be
complimenting myself on little steps I have achieved.
Achievable:
Considering that I have been working on this goal
for the last 51 years and I have still not achieved it, it is difficult to say
for certain if it is achievable.
Realistic:
Yes, it should be realistic, I am good enough, now
all that needs to happen, is for me to actually also believe it.
Time Specific:
This is a long term plan if I am realistic. I hope
to have achieved this in a year's time, although it probably more realistic to
put it in a 5 year plan.
Goal 6.
I want to lose some weight. Before I met my husband
and had my children, I was only 53 kg. I was happy with that weight. Even after
my first and second child, I managed to get back to that weight. After my
third, I was stuck at about 55 kg, which is still a nice weight. However, since
my 4th child I have let things get out of hand gradually and I am now nearly 10
kg heavier than I used to be. It would be nice if I could get a bit closer to
my original weight, although I would be happy with 55 kg.
Specific:
I want to lose weight and get back to 53-55 kg
before I turn 53.
Measurable:
Due to the fact we are talking about weight, this
is measurable.
Achievable:
As I have once had this weight, it should be
possible to achieve it again.
Realistic:
Yes, it is realistic, but only if I improve my diet
and exercise regimen.
Time Specific:
I want to achieve this before I turn 53 in November
next year.
Goal 7.
I want to do more exercise.
Specific:
I want to build in some protected time to do
exercise every day. Half an hour of yoga every morning and evening would be a
good start. This to work on improving flexibility, posture and wellbeing.
Measurable:
As I have specified the time element, it is
measurable.
Achievable:
This should be achievable, prior to meeting my husband;
I have done this for several years.
Realistic:
Yes, it is realistic, but only if I don't allow
myself to get side tracked.
Time Specific:
I want to achieve this today.
Goal 8.
I want to spend more time studying and keeping up
to date. Currently it usually is a last minute effort to deal with all the
targets I have set myself for the next year.
Specific:
I will set aside protected time every week for
studying and keeping up to date.
Measurable:
Due to the fact it will be set aside as protected
time on a schedule, this should be measurable.
Achievable:
If I keep to the specified schedule, this should be
achievable.
Realistic:
Yes, it is realistic, but only if I keep to the
schedule I set myself.
Time Specific:
I want to achieve this by next week and then
indefinitely.
Goal 9.
I want to spend more time crafting for relaxation.
I have not had much time for crafting over the last year as things have been
busy at work and at home. However, if I want to be able to look after everyone
else, I should first look after number one, me. A way of that is by
relaxing through crafting.
Specific:
I will build in some protected time each week for
crafting again.
Measurable:
As this will be built into my schedule, this should
be measurable.
Achievable:
It should be achievable to build this into my
routine.
Realistic:
Yes, it is realistic, but only if I keep to a
strict routine.
Time Specific:
I want to achieve this within the next year.
Goal 10.
I want to be a better team leader at CRAFT
Challenge. Over the last year this role has been neglected somewhat due to
other responsibilities. I want to put this back on track.
Specific:
I will build in some protected time each week to
deal with CRAFT Challenge related issues.
Measurable:
As this will be built into my schedule, this should
be measurable.
Achievable:
It should be achievable to build this into my
routine.
Realistic:
Yes, it is realistic, but only if I keep to a
strict routine.
Time Specific:
I want to achieve this within the next 2 weeks.
